Mastering Medium: 5 Simple Tricks to Boost Your Views and Engagement
Are you struggling to get more views on your Medium articles? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many writers face the same challenge, especially when they’re just starting out. And I’m one of them.
This article was intended for me to read when I feel frustrated and discouraged- kind of like a letter-my-future-self type of thing but I figured I’d share it so that maybe other people like me would find it benefiting.
Getting views will take time, some people may get lucky and hit the jackpot but for most of us, this is a slow process and we need to learn to enjoy the journey.
While it is true that seeing that your articles, that you spend hours to write and edit, are getting appreciated and seen does feel good and can be very motivational for us to continue writing, we must remember that we write for our own good. We write because we enjoy writing, we write because we have a message to deliver to the world. So, never forget that!
I have read a lot of tips and tricks here on Medium and on the internet in general, while most were not really that useful, I found some that were really good, so without further ado, let’s get into it.
‘If I were the reader, would I read this?’
I came across this in an article here on Medium and I think this is the key point. Despite my eagerness to elaborate further, I can’t explain it better then Ruqayyah Ali:
Considering this allows me to ponder on the motives of my writing and the quality of my work itself. If ever my answer to this question is no, or I am unsure how to respond, this indicates to me that I am not doing something right or something ought to be done to amend this mishap or several of them.
What one must acknowledge is that writing is your voice on paper (or screen), it is that voice that reaches out to readers; this voice needs to be potent enough for readers to want to grasp a hold of it. To taste it and want to come back for it. And to do that, you need to ensure it interests them.
But preparatory to this, you require to make it interest you.

Now, after you decided on why you’re going to write, here are a few tips to take it to the next level:
Keep your titles short and catchy
Long, complicated titles can turn readers off before they even start reading. Instead, use short, snappy titles that immediately grab their attention. You can try using titles like “Wow, this happened…” or “I had a great time…”. The goal is to pique their curiosity and make them want to click to read more.
I know most of you already knew that but I saw a lot of new writers make this mistake, so I had to mention it.
Use eye-catching images
Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words. I would argue that a nice picture is as important as the title and maybe even more.
An eye-catching image can instantly draw readers in and entice them to read more. It can also help break up large blocks of text and make your article more visually appealing.
However, it’s important to choose images that are not only relevant to your article but also high-quality and engaging. Using low-quality or irrelevant images can actually do more harm than good and turn readers away from your content.
So, make sure to spend some time finding the perfect images that will complement your article and capture your readers’ attention.
Break up your paragraphs
Vary sentence lengths and structures and break up your paragraphs into smaller chunks of 3–4 lines each. This will make it easier for readers to scan through your content and find the information they’re looking for.
Engage with other writers
Leave a nice comment, and always offer claps to articles that you enjoy. It makes you happy when someone claps 50 times for your article, so why not make another writer’s day by doing the same?
Ultimately, gaining more views on Medium is a process that takes time and effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Keep practicing and applying these tips, and soon enough, your articles will see success. Remember to enjoy the journey, and don’t forget to engage with your audience by responding to comments and sharing your own tips and experiences.
If you have any questions or additional tips that have personally helped you, feel free to share them in the comments section below. Together, we can continue to learn and grow as writers on Medium. Happy writing!
